Introduction

Follicular-like dendritic cell secretory protein (FDC-SP) is a protein that can be anchored to the surface of B cells by follicular-like dendritic cells. Its gene is localized to 4q13, which regulates antibody response and B cell tropism. It can also participate in defense functions. FDC-SP is expressed in the bright region of lymphoid germinal center and is also expressed in leukocyte-infiltrated tonsil crypts and in leukocytes activated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and Staphylococcus aureus Cowan-1 strain, and also expressed in the gingival sulcus combined with epithelium. It is very important in the process of oral natural immune defense.

Mechanism of action

FDC-SP binds to target cells through specific receptors in a similar manner to cytokines and chemokines. FDC-SP is a newly discovered evolutionarily conserved secreted protein expressed by FDC that is anchored to the surface of B cells expressed by C4ORF7, which can regulate antibody response, B cell chemotaxis, and participate in defense function. Its role in the oral cavity is complex, and current research reveals that it promotes cell adhesion to the bone surface and regulates the proliferation of periodontal ligament cells (PDLC), stabilizes the plasma membrane of fibroblasts and inhibits mineralization. It can be used as an important structure of the natural immune defense of the oral cavity to bind to the specific marker molecules of the epithelium.

Application of FDC-SP Related Peptides

In the oral cavity, FDC-SP positively regulates the proliferation of periodontal ligament cells and inhibits the differentiation of fibroblasts into mineralized tissue cells by the epidermal growth factor receptor signal transduction pathway. It is a specific marker of the epithelial binding of oral natural immune defense, and its expression level is closely related to LPS. It can reveal the periodontal health status and the progress of periodontal disease by its localization and quantitative measurement. FDC-SP prevents calcium deposits in the periodontal ligament, maintains the unmineralized state of the periodontal ligament, and promotes the adsorption of the periodontal ligament to the cementum and alveolar bone surface. FDC-SP is a biomarker for periodontal health considering its unique role and manifestation in the natural immunity of gingival epithelium.
