The molecule contains an N-acetylated amino nitrogen, a free carboxyl group on the side chain, and a free carboxyl group at the α-position, with the side chain bearing a terminal carboxylate that can participate in acid-base equilibria and metal-ion coordination. As an isotopically labeled amino acid derivative, it is used for stable-isotope tracing, mass spectrometric or NMR-based analytical method development, and preparation of labeled glutamate-containing building blocks for biochemical and peptide-related structure-function studies.
