Z-glycine methyl ester

Z-glycine methyl ester contains the glycine amino acid framework in which the amino group is protected as a benzyloxycarbonyl (Z, Cbz) carbamate and the carboxyl group is converted to a methyl ester. The molecule therefore bears a carbamate-protected α-amino functionality and an esterified carboxyl group, with the remaining side chain consisting of a hydrogen substituent characteristic of glycine. As a protected amino acid ester, it is used as a building block for peptide synthesis and for preparing glycine-containing peptide intermediates where controlled chemoselectivity of the protected amine and ester functionality is required.
