Z-DL-Ala-OSu is a protected alanine derivative in which the amino acid is present as a DL (racemic) mixture and the α-amino group is carbamated with a benzyloxycarbonyl (Z, Cbz) protecting group while the carboxyl functionality is converted to an N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (OSu). The molecule therefore contains the Z-protected amino group and an activated carboxyl group as the succinimide ester, bearing an aromatic carbamate protecting group that modulates chemoselectivity during coupling chemistry.
