Z-DL-Trp-OH

Z-DL-Trp-OH contains a DL mixture of tryptophan (Trp) featuring an indole side chain and a free primary amino group and carboxylic acid, with the alpha-amino functionality bearing a benzyloxycarbonyl (Z, Cbz) protecting group. The molecule is therefore a protected amino acid derivative rather than an unprotected natural amino acid, where the Cbz carbamate masks the amino group to control chemoselectivity during peptide-related transformations while the indole ring provides aromatic functionality for downstream derivatization or analytical handling. Z-DL-Trp-OH is used as a building block in peptide synthesis workflows and in the preparation of tryptophan-containing peptide intermediates, where stepwise incorporation of the protected residue supports selective coupling and subsequent deprotection strategies.
