Tos-Ala-OH is an alanine derivative bearing a tosyl (p-toluenesulfonyl) group on the amino functionality, with the remaining carboxylic acid present as a free -COOH group. The molecule therefore contains a protected amine (tosylated nitrogen) and an unprotected carboxyl group, and it is structurally distinct from an unmodified free amino acid by virtue of the sulfonamide-forming sulfonyl protecting group. Tos-Ala-OH is used as a chemically defined intermediate for controlled amino acid handling in peptide-related synthesis and for preparing further alanine-based derivatives where selective reactivity of the carboxyl group and the tosyl-protected amine are required.
