Z-Arg(Mtr)-OtBu is a protected arginine derivative featuring an Nα-benzyloxycarbonyl (Z) group on the amino terminus and a side-chain guanidinium protected as the Mtr (4-methoxy-2,3,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonyl-like) aryl sulfonamide-type protecting group, along with a tert-butyl ester (OtBu) at the carboxyl terminus. The molecule therefore contains the arginine backbone bearing a substituted guanidine functionality masked to reduce undesired reactivity, while the Z carbamate and OtBu ester provide chemoselectivity by suppressing amine and carboxyl participation during stepwise assembly. Z-Arg(Mtr)-OtBu is used as a peptide-building block in protected-amino-acid strategies, where its controlled functional group protection supports coupling and downstream deprotection to generate arginine-containing peptide intermediates for synthesis and structure-activity or labeling studies.
