Z-L-glutamic acid

Z-L-glutamic acid is a protected form of the naturally occurring amino acid glutamic acid, featuring the α-amino and α-carboxyl functionalities of the L-glutamate backbone and a side chain bearing a terminal carboxylic acid. The Z group (benzyloxycarbonyl) protects the amino functionality, providing chemoselective control by masking the amine and reducing undesired side reactions during peptide-coupling steps, while the carboxyl-bearing side chain remains available for further chemical handling. Z-L-glutamic acid is used as an amino acid building block in peptide synthesis and related derivatization workflows where stepwise incorporation of glutamate residues and controlled reactivity of the amino group are required.
