Z-Arg-p-nitrobenzyl ester is an arginine-derived amino acid ester in which the α-amino group is protected as a benzyloxycarbonyl (Z, Cbz) carbamate and the carboxyl group is esterified with p-nitrobenzyl. The molecule contains a guanidinium-bearing arginine side chain, along with the carbamate-protected amino functionality and the benzylic ester linkage, and its structure is consistent with a protected amino acid ester used to control chemoselectivity during stepwise assembly. Z-Arg-p-nitrobenzyl ester is employed as a protected arginine building block for peptide synthesis and as an intermediate for preparing further arginine-containing derivatives, where the Z group and the p-nitrobenzyl ester provide orthogonal functional-group handling for sequential transformations and downstream deprotection.
