Z-Arg(Tos)-OH is a protected arginine amino acid derivative in which the α-amino group is carbobenzyloxy (Z/Cbz) protected and the side-chain guanidinium is masked as a tosyl (Tos) ether/amide-type protecting group. The molecule contains a free carboxylic acid (-COOH) and a substituted guanidinium functionality rendered less basic by tosyl protection, while the Z group controls chemoselectivity by preventing unprotected amine reactivity during stepwise assembly. Z-Arg(Tos)-OH is used as a protected amino acid building block for peptide synthesis and related coupling strategies where orthogonal protection of the guanidinium side chain supports controlled formation of peptide bonds and downstream deprotection to reveal the arginine-like functionality.
