Z-O-tert.butyl-D-serine is a protected serine derivative in which the amino acid side chain bears a tert-butyl ether (O-tert-butyl) and the amino group is protected as a benzyloxycarbonyl-type carbamate (Z). The molecule contains a carboxylic acid functionality and a stereogenic center corresponding to D-serine, with the serine side chain hydroxyl masked as an ether to control chemoselectivity during peptide coupling and subsequent deprotection. Z-O-tert.butyl-D-serine is used as a stepwise building block for peptide synthesis and as a protected intermediate for preparing serine-containing peptide analogues or other serine-derived conjugates where selective handling of the side-chain oxygen is required.
