Z-D-Val-ONp is a protected, amino acid derivative based on the D stereochemical form of valine, bearing a benzyloxycarbonyl (Z, Cbz) protecting group on the amino functionality and an ONp ester at the carboxylate. The molecule contains the valine side chain with an isopropyl substituent, while the Z group masks the α-amino group and the ONp (p-nitrophenyl) ester converts the carboxyl functionality into an activated leaving-group-bearing ester suitable for acyl transfer chemistry. Z-D-Val-ONp is used in peptide synthesis and related acylation strategies where controlled activation of the carboxyl group and protection of the amine support stepwise assembly of peptide-related intermediates under chemoselective conditions.
