Z-L-Trp-ONp

Z-L-Trp-ONp is a protected amino acid derivative consisting of L-tryptophan bearing an N-benzyloxycarbonyl (Z, Cbz) protecting group on the amino functionality and an ONp ester (p-nitrophenyl ester) at the carboxyl terminus. The indole side chain of tryptophan remains unmodified, providing a conjugated aromatic system, while the molecule contains both the carbamate-protected amine and the activated carboxylate ester that can undergo acyl transfer chemistry under appropriate conditions. Z-L-Trp-ONp is used as an acylating building block and peptide-synthesis intermediate in contexts where an activated carboxyl group is required for coupling to amines, as well as in chemical biology and analytical workflows that rely on controlled introduction of tryptophan-containing fragments.
